WHAT WE OFFER

The Arts League’s atmosphere is informal. Classes are limited in size to assure that students get the attention needed. Our instructors have expertise in their subject matter, excellent teaching skills and are both enthusiastic and supportive.

Class registrations


Registration and Cancellation Policy:
            Your registration fee must be received to be confirmed for a workshop or class.  Cancellations three weeks prior to the class will result in a full refund less a $15 administration fee.  No refunds will be made for cancellations fewer than three weeks prior to the class.  However you may send someone else in your place.

Class: BOTANICAL PAINTING

Details:Get ready for spring by painting daffodils and crocuses. Back by popular demand, a workshop that attracts those who are interested in Botanical Art and students wanting to go through the entire creative process beginning with pencil sketches and studies, developing the composition, learning about typical botanical approaches and ending with final layout, matting and framing. A different approach from last year will be offered.

LEE DZMURA
D’Zmura is a botanical artist whose experience as a landscape architect is expressed in her watercolors. Having focused on historic landscape preservation, her professional projects include the Jefferson Memorial and Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC. D’Zmura is a member of the Botanical Artists and Botanical Art Societies of the National Capital Region. Her work is in collections throughout the country and has been juried into numerous exhibitions.

Class: PASTEL PAINTING (STILL LIFES)

Details: This class will emphasize pastel techniques. Experiments with a variety of surfaces will enable students to improve their skills and expressiveness.  Students will explore different approaches to the still life format and how to transfer these concepts into their own work.  Demonstrations and critiques are part of this lively and intensive workshop.

MARY PRITCHARD
Pritchard received her BA in studio art from Mount Holyoke College and has Master’s degrees in both art and journalism. She was in-house corporate art curator for Ashland Oil, Inc, advising on the acquisition, installation, and conservation of art. Following a career in education administration at the University of Delaware, she returned to painting fulltime. An award- winning pastel artist, she is known for her landscapes of the unique vistas of the Eastern Shore and Virginia.

Class: BASIC COLORED PENCIL PAINTING (STILL LIFE)

Details: Learn to identify shapes, build on color and shade to create a realistic still life. Composition, form and technique will be discussed so all will feel comfortable creating their final piece.

KITTY DODD
After trying virtually every media, Dodd fell in love with colored pencils because they can create almost every look that one can imagine; they are easy to transport, are neat, and can elicit an emotional bond because the pencil is an extension of your finger. Dodd has attended the University of Michigan, Corcoran School of Art, Mary Baldwin College and the Savannah College of Art and Design and has studied with several artists in different media including the founder of the Colored Pencil Society of America. While teaching at a private school in Virginia, Dodd “developed” different ways to use colored pencils, some of which will be taught in workshops at the 2008 CPSA National Convention.

Details: Day 1 Fraktured Watercolor/Colored Pencil Paintings
Learn a clever way to create a still life that is both abstract and realistic, fun and attention getting. A watercolor and plastic wrap base is laid down and the picture is drawn over the dried color. Final art looks like a broken mirror.

Day 2 Painting with Colored Pencils and Sticks
Learn an approach that is about as non-traditional as colored pencil can get. Use contact paper, sponges, cotton, odorless mineral spirits, etc. and leave with a unique and conversational work of art.

DetailsA survey of the class will help students determine what their intuitive taste/ focus might be and whether or not their recent work matches up with their intuitive judgments. Through demonstrations, painting experiments, critiques and discussions students will work on strategies to help them begin working towards a personal style.

JOE MAYER            
Mayer’s paintings have been exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery, Washington County Museum and many commercial galleries from Maine to California. He received the Bronze Medal in 2005 and the Richeson Award in 2007 at the Mid-Atlantic Watercolor Show. He is represented by Gallery 1683 in Annapolis, MD.

Details:
Strengthen your paintings and make them more personal by exploring content, intent, passion and purpose. Discover techniques to build up a painting with color, line, shape and texture in intuitive experimental ways. Learn ways to critique your work, build stronger compositions moving from realistic to abstract, and then finish your starts. Find out how to revive a dud and determine when you are done. Individual and group critiques before and after workshop

CAROLE D. BARNES
Barnes is a member of the National Watercolor Society, the American Watercolor Society and other prestigious art associations and has received over 40 awards in national juried shows, including the National Academy of Design. She teaches water media workshops across the country. American Artist magazine named her acrylic teacher of the year. She states: “I want my paintings to reflect my response to nature and the essence of landscape. I am also intrigued with symbols, mythology and the world of ancient time and place. The painting evolves to express my feelings using my personal visual language”.

Details: Pastel is a flexible and forgiving medium especially suited to plein air work. Students will strengthen pastel techniques doing many quick studies capturing the changing conditions of the landscape. Learn to focus, eliminate distractions, and compose vibrant landscapes while enhancing your personal painting style.

Class: LANDSCAPE PAINTING IN OILS

Details: This outdoor workshop will focus on creative interpretation of the landscape. Explore different concepts each day: how simplifying, exaggerating, creative color, rhythm, shapes and line work can create more personally expressive paintings. Students will do many exercises and small studies onsite as well as talk about making artistic choices to suit personal vision. Group critiques and individualized instruction

SHARON CARSON
Carson has been painting and teaching for more than 30 years. Whether working in oils, watercolors or acrylics, she places great importance on creative expression. Her paintings have been accepted into many juried shows including those sponsored by the Salmagundi Club. Knickerbocker Artists, Hudson Valley Artists, the National Academy of Design, Southern Vermont Arts Center, Symphony Hall in Boston, and the Boston Design Center. Her work is also found in several museums: Whistler House Museum, The Copley Society Museum, the Attleboro Museum, and the Museum at Les Amis de la Grande Vigne in Dinan, France. Carson has been a featured artist in American Artist magazine.

The list of classes runs through October, 2007. Please do not wait until the last minute to register. Each instructor has enough of a following for the workshops to fill quickly. In order for these classes to run we need students to sign up as soon as possible.
